Mental Health in Tacoma

The Peirce County Community Connections Division provides community members with a vast number of resources regarding local support groups. Groups meet for a variety of purposes, including Alzheimer's support, grief sharing, survivors of violence, and those recently divorced. Groups specifically for issues important to women are available, as are groups for those recovering from chemical dependency. Peirce County also provides a crisis hotline to those in an immediate emergency. That number can be reached at 253-396-5180.2

On any given night, almost 2,000 adults and children reside on the streets of Tacoma.3 There is growing concern to provide shelter to these people and offer support regarding mental health issues, which are highly common in homeless persons. Support for the homeless is provided by Catholic Community Services, which provides much-needed comfort, shelter, and protection to these individuals. This center provides a safe place to both men and women and caters to their mental health concerns by offering on-site mental health outreach and therapeutic services. Current Initiatives

The Youth Program Quality Initiative seeks to improve the quality and access to youth programming in the Tacoma area. The initiative supports youth programs that serve kids between the ages of 10-18 and focuses on strengthening after-school and summer programs so that youth have access to high quality, meaningful and relevant activities in the city.
