If your family enjoys watching professional sports, then you have several choices, such as the Minnesota Twins professional baseball team, the Minnesota Vikings football team, or even the Minnesota Timberwolves professional basketball team.1 There are also many parks to enjoy with the family, such as the Chain of Lakes that has a pathway that is used for biking, walking, or running, with the lakes being used for boating, picnics, ice skating, fishing, or swimming. There are over 20 private schools and academies in Minneapolis, some of which are Blake School, Minnehaha Academy, San Miguel Middle School, Second Foundation School, and Carodelet Catholic School, to name a few. Of course, families always enjoy a good museum, such as the Bell Museum of Natural History, the Weisman Art Museum, Mill City Museum, and many others. Minneapolis has a lot of fun and interesting things to do in and around the city for people of all ages.

Mental Health in Minneapolis

As a state, Minnesota has one of the highest rates of serious mental illness among citizens aged 18 and over in the nation.2 The Twin Cities area alone has an estimated 169,000 people living with major depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, and other serious behavioral issues. For the numerous homeless residents of Minneapolis, rates of mental illness are even higher, with as many as 70 percent of those without a stable home having a diagnosable mental disorder.3

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Minnesota Chapter offers a number of support groups for individuals in the Minneapolis area. Dozens of groups for adults living with mental illness are available, and provide a safe, caring place where individuals can both receive and offer support to others. The Young Adults group is available for individuals between the ages of 16 and 20 who have a mental illness. Parents can also find help in the Parent Connection group. A support group for LGBT residents is available as well. Many more groups are available throughout the year. Call 651-645-2948 for more information.4

Current Initiatives

The Mental Health Education Project (MHEP) is an ongoing initiative by the Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis that raises awareness about common mental health issues that children and families face. Through education, training, and outreach services, MHEP seeks to develop strong community support for mental health care in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Improving access to quality care for all people is another primary goal of the initiative. For additional information about MHEP and the programs and services associated with the project, call 952-542-4815.5
