There are many different things to do in Aurora, such as visiting the Aurora Fox Arts Center, Symphony Orchestra, Aurora History Museum, historic sites, trails, and Morrison Nature Center, to name a few. The Aurora Fox Arts Center entices people to come inside with its neon lights in a 1940s-era restored movie house where live performances, classes, and workshops are held. The Aurora Symphony Orchestra, which was formed in 1978, performs renditions of the classical compositions at the Gateway Center for the Performing Arts. For history buffs, visit the Eisenhower Tower at the Fitzsimons Medical Center where former President Eisenhower recovered from a heart attack.1 The different historical sites around town serve as a reminder of the social, cultural and architectural history in the town. The Morrison Nature Center is a 200-acre Star K Ranch and Nature Center that is located along the Sand Creek Greenway. Some of the activities experienced here are riding trails, nature hikes and workshops.

Mental Health in Aurora

Aurora is the third largest city in Colorado2 and shares many of the mental health concerns of Denver, it's larger neighbor to the north. Twenty-one percent of adults in Aurora have used an illegal drug in the past year. Binge drinking and tobacco use are also common problems. As a result, nearly 12 percent of Aurora citizens suffer from a substance use disorder. Another 7.5 percent of adults have had a major depressive episode.3

The city of Aurora offers a wide range of youth programs that seek to educate children, help them stay safe, and engage them in recreational activities that promote healthy living. The Office of Youth Development is responsible for creating and delivering programs for youth that encourage life-enhancing skills and positive behaviors. Children with special needs can participate in the city's therapeutic recreation program that provides supportive environments in which to learn and grow. The city's future leaders can become involved with local government through the Aurora Youth Commission, which advises city leaders on issues important to children in the community. To receive more information about these programs, please call 303-739-7000.4

Current Initiatives

In response to a growing number of youth and adults involved in the criminal justice system who need mental health care, the Colorado General Assembly authorized the Offender Mental Health Services Initiative. The initiative seeks to increase the ability of community mental health centers to serve those in need, as well as reduce the rate of recidivism for those who have been released from detention. Multiple kinds of therapy are made available as part of the initiative, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and functional family therapy. For more information about the initiative, please call 303-866-7504.5
