Encino is a hilly district within the Los Angeles area and located in the central part of the southern San Fernando Valley, but north of the Santa Monica Mountains.  The name is from the Rancho Los Encinos, which was a piece a land that was given to the Mission Indians by the Spanish government in the early 1800s.  It wasn’t until 1845 that Rancho Encino was officially established.  The city is surrounded by two other cities and a dam to the north and a reservoir to the south.  There are around 41,000 people that reside in Encino.
