Vancouver, Washington has seen new development as the city has added more parks, hotels, shopping complexes and much more, increasing the number of families moving to the town. In this city, everyone enjoys a sense of community, as exemplified by the Independence Day firework display at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site (the largest display west of the Mississippi River). Along with this sense of community come festivals and events such as Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival in August and the St. Joseph Catholic School Vancouver Sausage Fest in September. Here you and your family can enjoy quality-bonding time, while also mingling with fellow residents. These attractions are also great date ideas for couples and parents wishing to enjoy a night on the town. For those seeking to gain an educational experience for their children and teenagers, the Pearson Air Museum is located within the city limits and offers a great experience for the family in a cozy environment.1

Mental Health in Vancouver

Vancouver residents who need assistance in finding employment or improving their employment status can rely on several local agencies for help. For the large veteran population in the area, the Clark County Veterans Assistance Center can provide guidance and direction for military veterans as they search for civilian work. Employment assistance, including job searches, resume drafting and transportation to and from interviews is available. Call 360-693-7030 for further information.2 Partners in Careers is another area agency dedicated to helping people find adequate employment. In particular, Partners in Careers works with low-income and poverty-stricken individuals who seek to better their lives and the lives of their loved ones through employment. Job skills trainings are available, as are language skills classes for recent immigrants. Their YouthFirst program provides part-time work for young workers. Call 360-696-8417 for more information.3

Children who become addicted to any substance can be seen exhibiting abnormal behavior, such as mood swings, hyperactivity, and irritability. To address such issues, The Children's Center has a coaches program, which is specialized to treat children facing meth addiction. Through proper support and care for the children, this program aims to re-instill in children a sense of belonging and addresses other mental and health problems as well. Most often addictions are in themselves a derivative of an underlying problem. Counseling children in the right way can correct their behavior. For further details, contact the Children's Center at 360-699-2244.4
