SPEAK is a local non-profit organization dedicated to ending suicide in Maryland. The organization works with local police, schools, churches, and hospitals to advocate on behalf of individuals who have taken or attempted to take their own life. Their prevention-based programs have been implemented in Maryland public schools to inform children about the warning signs of suicidal ideation and what they can do to help others in need. Community outreach programs also work to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness, so people better understand the underlying reasons associated with suicide.4
