Denver is the capital of Colorado, and one of the most populous in the state. The city is located in the South Platte River Valley, which is south of the Southern Rocky Mountains. The city is nicknamed the Mile High City because its elevation is exactly a mile high, 5,280 feet above sea level.1 The city itself has around 589,000 people, but the metropolitan area, which includes 12 counties in the Denver area, has around 3 million people. However, there are 18 counties in the Front Range Urban Corridor with approximately 4.2 million people. It is the second largest city in the Mountain West, behind Phoenix. The city was founded in 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. During this time, a group of prospectors settled in the area and established Montana City along the banks of the South Platte River. Today it is a family friendly place, home to a vast spectrum of cultures and peoples. Children, couples, families, singles, and parents of all creeds have made their home in this great city.

Not only does the initiative provide resources and support services for those in need, it also seeks to improve access to services to underserved communities, particularly the homeless, the poor, and the working poor. Additionally, the initiative works to improve services for citizens who are elderly, have developmental disabilities, or who are chronically mentally ill.5
