Located just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, San Rafael has a large number of its own attractions for families, plus easy access to the larger city across the Bay. The Marin County Civic Center boasts an 11-acre lagoon and a 20-acre park, which offers picnic areas, children's play structures, fishing and non-motorized boating right in the center of town. Children and teenagers alike will find plenty to do at the John F. McInnis Park, located on Smith Ranch Road, one mile east of Highway 101. The park offers tennis, skateboarding, soccer, golf and playgrounds - something for everyone.1 Dog-loving families will enjoy exploring the Guide Dogs for the Blind training center, where they can visit the kennels and tour the facility. Families interested in local history can visit the Mission San Rafael Arcangel, a replica of the original mission founded in 1817. The WWII Military Vehicle Museum is another interesting attraction.

Mental Health in San Rafael

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) works hard in cities throughout the country to bring equal rights to the LGBTQ community. While San Rafael has passed some ordinances that protect the rights of this community, many individuals, couples and families still face discrimination, harassment, employment bias and inadequate mental health services. With the HRC's help, educational and outreach programs, as well as political action committees are bringing change to San Rafael and other cities in the Bay Area.1

Bullying in schools is a common problem across the United States, and the San Francisco Bay Area is no exception. To combat negativity in schools, the Human Rights Commission has implemented school-based programs to raise awareness about bullying and to increase respect and kindness in schools throughout the Bay Area. Programs for adults have also been implemented, to inform and educate teachers and other school personnel about how to appropriately respond to these kinds of situations. Additional information about these programs is available by calling 415-252-2500.3

Current Initiatives

To address the mental health needs of poor and working poor families with children, the Children and Family Services division of the Marin County Government has begun the Children's Health Initiative. The purpose of the program is to provide health insurance enrollment assistance for families who are currently uninsured. The insurance programs offered are free or low cost, and include medical, dental vision, and mental health coverage. For more information, call 415-473-3434.4
