Regardless of your idea of fun, there is truly something here for everyone in the family.

Mental Health in Waco

Living with a mental illness can be extremely challenging. But facing stigmas about mental illness from friends, family, neighbors and community members only serves to increase those challenges. The Waco chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness works hard to dispel stigmas in the community. Educational and outreach programs seek to educate community members about how mental health issues arise, how they are treated, and how people with a mental illness can function normally in their day-to-day-activities. Advocacy programs additionally support the mentally ill by ensuring that local policymakers are well informed about issues important to those with mental health difficulties. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young people. With that in mind, the Junior League of Waco initiated the Teen Suicide Prevention Symposium. The symposium's central focus is to provide educational materials and outreach programs in the Waco area that inform residents of common warning signs. Additionally, the symposium seeks to raise awareness of childhood issues that have been linked to suicide, such as bullying and intimidation at school. To find out more about these ongoing efforts to improve the safety and mental health of Waco teens, call 254-753-5574.3

The Helping Others Take Initiative Program seeks to improve the functioning of Waco residents who have a developmental or intellectual disability. A central focus of the program is to provide residents with supportive employment and vocational training opportunities. These services give individuals practical job skills so they can be more self-sufficient. Life skills trainings are also offered to ensure participants can carry out activities of daily living on their own. Social programs increase peer-to-peer interactions, providing residents with the social supports they need to learn, grow and be active community members. For more details, call 254-752-3451.4

Current Initiatives

The City of Waco has instituted the Homelessness 10-Year Plan in order to improve services available to those who live on the streets and transition them into permanent housing. The initiative includes outreach programs to educate the homeless about the services available to them in the Waco area. Prevention strategies seek to bolster community resources such that more people do not find themselves without a place to live. Additionally, the initiative focuses on making healthcare and mental health services more accessible and available, so residents can get the care they need in order to get off the streets.5
