Columbus is one of the most beautiful cities in Ohio. With over 60 community gardens, an arboretum, and lots of parks, there are plenty of ways to enjoy life in the outdoors.1 Hiking and biking clubs are a great way to join the community and experience the joy of physical activity. If you would like something less strenuous, you can connect with one of the gardening groups, or play a game of golf at one of the three world-class golf courses. Also, besides a few thunderstorms, the weather is good throughout the year, giving you even less reason to stay inside. If you're looking for a great place to stay in shape and enjoy the open air, look no further than Columbus, Ohio.

Mental Health in Columbus

There is a vital need for mental health care in Columbus. Each year, as many as 50,000 individuals are admitted to psychiatric treatment programs. Homicide and suicide rates are higher in Franklin County than the state of Ohio as a whole. Additonally, the Columbus-Franklin County area accounts for 10 percent of all alcohol related car crashes in the state.2

Mental Health America of Franklin County provides pro bono counseling services to Columbus residents who require mental health care and are unable to afford it. A network of qualified, licensed, and insured mental health professionals offer services to assist people with depression, other common mental illnesses, trouble at home, difficulty with children, and a host of other common problems. Services are available to those who are uninsured, underinsured, unemployed, or otherwise unable to pay. For further information about the pro bono counseling program, please call 614-884-7227.3

Current Initiatives

In order to address the severe shortage of beds for Columbus citizens in need of intensive psychiatric care, public and private institutions throughout Franklin County have joined forces to form the Franklin County Mental Health Initiative. The primary goal of the initiative is to coordinate information between the area's three adult hospital systems, crisis intervention facility, state psychiatric hospital, and other organizations to ensure access to quality care for everyone. Daily briefings keep officials at all member facilities informed of the number of people waiting for a bed in an inpatient treatment program. Individuals are placed based on their wait time and are placed in the next available bed regardless of the facility at which the patient is being treated. For additional information about the initiative, please call 614-358-2710.4
