Dallas was founded as a city in 1841 and was historically an important center for oil and cotton production.1 This, together with its ideal location along major railroad lines and strong financial and industrial sectors, allowed the city to grow immensely despite its lack of a direct link to the sea. Today, Dallas is considered the most politically and culturally liberal city in Texas. Despite this, the city remains a prominent center for conservative Protestant Christian seminars and influential churches. However, the greater Dallas area is accommodating to people from all walks of life.

Mental Health in Dallas

Over 830,000 Texas residents live with a mental illness. With Dallas being the third largest city in the state, it has a significant number of mentally ill residents. Yet, the Texas mental health system is underfunded and overburdened. As a result, only 21 percent of citizens who require behavioral health care are receiving it. Over 13 percent of Texas residents are on Medicaid and rely on public mental health services to meet their needs.2 With proper health care difficult to find, low-income residents often end up on the streets or incarcerated.

Advocating on behalf of the poor and other underserved populations is Mental Health America (MHA) of Greater Dallas. The mission of MHA is to improve the quality and accessibility of mental health care through education. MHA offers a number of outreach programs aimed specifically at educating the general public, as well as those with mental illness, about effective treatments for various mental health issues. MHA also offers support groups for people suffering from depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other prevalent mental illnesses. Additional information about MHA and its programs and services is available by calling 214-871-2420.3

Current Initiatives

Amidst very rapid population growth and declining availability of quality mental health care, Dallas County, Texas has implemented the Texas Mental Health Transformation Initiative. The purpose of the program, which is a collaboration between public and private agencies, mental health practitioners, and consumers of mental health services, is to develop consumer-driven, recovery-focused programs that fill in the gaps in community mental health services throughout the county. Of particular emphasis is developing prison diversion programs, mental health services, and social support services. For further information about the Health Transformation Initiative, call 214-366-9407 extension 112.4
