Thunder Bay used to be made up of what is commonly known as the twin cities in Ontario—Fort William and Port Arthur.  Thunder Bay has approximately 123,000 people who reside in this northwestern part of Ontario.  The area was settled by European settlers in the late 1600s when the French fur trading outpost was established on the Kaministiquia River.  The city was formerly made a city in 1970 when the twin cities were merged.   Cutting-edge counselling reveals the hurt and effectively prevents further hardship while working with your therapist.  Your counsellor is a dynamic part of the restorative therapy process, empowering you to move forward and beyond with quality counseling.   This city is an important area for its port access for shipping of grains and other products from Western Canada to other areas, such as the Great Lakes region to the east coast.  Forestry and manufacturing also make up a large portion of the economics to the city, along with an increase in medical and research/education in the area.  The city was named from the bay at the head of Lake Superior.

Thunder Bay’s geography encompasses the area along the Kaministiquia River that has a river delta at the mouth. There are also two islands at the river delta—Mission Island and McKellar Island.  This area is also very flat along the River.  In the area that used to be Port Arthur has sloping hills with thin soil which is on top of the bedrock that lies beneath the surface.  There is also a lot of showing bedrock in the area.  Proactive Christian counselling can identify bad habits, and though-pattersn, and literally stop a crisis before it even happens.  Therapy rejuvenates us, helping us feel whole again, and your counselor will work with you through compassionate counseling for your well being.   The whole area is very large, being 14 miles long, stretching from downtown Port Arthur to Thunder Cape, which is at the tip of Sleeping Giant, a rock formation that resembles a sleeping giant.  The climate in Thunder Bay is heavily influenced by Lake Superior at the city’s north end.   This results in cooler summers and warmer winters.1

Mental Health in Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay has 10 golf courses, several recreational facilities and dozens of churches. Perhaps that's why so many seniors make the city their home. As of the latest census in 2011, more than 24,000 seniors make the city their home.2 Although there's plenty for seniors to do in the area, this population is often prone to mental health problems, including dementia, behavioral issues and other cognitive issues. Several agencies make services available to seniors who need mental health assistance in Thunder Bay.

One such agency providing senior care is St. Joseph's Care Group, more specifically the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital. The organization has an extensive list of programs to help seniors. Dementia care, psychogeriatric consulting, behavioral health outreach and psychiatric services are included in their mental health programs. For example, their psychiatric day program for seniors provides individual therapy, group therapy, socialization, education and life skills for seniors 65 years or older. Many resources are available for the families of seniors as well. To find out more about their senior behavioral and psychiatric programs, contact the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital at 807-343-4300.3

Current Education

Taking care of a senior with mental health problems is as challenging to the family as it is to the individual. The Canadian Mental Health Association provides family education and support through a 10-week program designed to give families skills to help their relatives recover. Fees are waived for some families. To inquire about the program and fees, call the education and training manager at 807-683-4952.4
