After the War for Independence was won, Boston became one of the wealthiest trading ports in the world. During the mid-1800s its economy was built on the back of its strong manufacturing industries such as garment production and leather goods. Manufacturing eventually overcame international trade as the most vital part of the city's economy. Irish immigrants began streaming into Boston following the potato famine of 1845-49. To this day, Boston has the largest percentage of descendants of Irish people in the nation.1 Boston therapists are available for individuals of all cultures and backgrounds with specializations for families who are looking to immigrate to the area. Boston was developed throughout the rest of the century as more settlers called the area home. It recovered from the economic slump of 1950 and has gone on to be a major global city with influence in virtually every area of human life.

Mental Health in Boston

Mental health care has long been an important topic for the state of Massachusetts. Over 185,000 state residents live with a mental illness.2 Approximately 15 percent of Boston residents have used an illicit drug in the past year, and over 10 percent report having a substance abuse disorder. Combined with a binge-drinking rate of 24 percent among persons 12 years of age and older,3 many of the city's residents are forced to deal with significant behavioral health issues.

Outreach and support services for Boston's homeless population are offered by Eliot Community Human Services. The Project for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness seeks to provide mental health assessment, treatment, advocacy, and benefit assistance to those without a permanent residence. These services are offered directly to those who are residing in emergency and transitional shelters in the metropolitan area. Food, blankets, and other supplies are also delivered to those living on the streets. For information about other programs and services, call 781-861-0890.4

Current Initiatives

The State of Massachusetts has undertaken the Children's Behavioral Health Initiative to expand and improve services delivered by state mental health agencies to the state's children. The initiative focuses on growing community-based care to ensure that all families have a local option for obtaining behavioral, emotional, and mental health care. Many in-home services are also provided as part of the initiative. Programs are child-centered, strengths-based, culturally responsive, and specifically target low-income children 21 years of age and younger. Screenings for the presence of behavioral health conditions are also offered.5
