Mental Health in Rochester

The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley is dedicated to supporting the social and emotional needs of Rochester's LGBT community. Their youth programs provide support services, mentorship, and advocacy for young people who may face discrimination, bullying, and other negative behaviors due to their sexuality. The organization's outreach programs seek to promote positive interactions with the LGBT community while reducing stigmas and stereotypes. The Gay Alliance also promotes SafeZone programming at local schools and businesses to ensure LGBT individuals have an inclusive environment in which to learn and work. County-based mental health services are available to citizens of Rochester through the Monroe County Office of Mental Health. This agency coordinates and funds services to address the needs of the mentally ill, individuals with disabilities, and those who struggle with substance abuse or addiction. Providing assistance to individuals in a mental health emergency is a primary focus of the agency as well. Their mental health lifeline offers a link to supportive services in times of crisis. Mary's Place Outreach is dedicated to helping refugees and immigrants make the transition to American life as smooth as possible. The organization offers many free programs, including food and clothing, English tutoring, and educational support for children. Assistance finding adequate housing and obtaining Green Cards is also available. For those who have escaped violence or persecution in their home country, one-on-one social work services are offered to ensure the social, emotional, and health-related programs they need to flourish are provided. By offering these transitional services, Mary's Place ensures that refugees coming to Rochester will have the supports they need to integrate successfully into society. Current Initiatives

Reaching out to Rochester's homeless population is one of the principal projects of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Parishioners undertake outreach efforts on a regular basis to ensure individuals and families that do not have a home have access to food, hygiene products, and medical attention. Outreach workers also connect individuals to temporary shelters so they can rest in a safe, warm location.
