The history of Santa Rosa starts with the settlement of a European family sometime in the early 1800s. Santa Rosa continued to grow after California became a state, although it lagged behind Petaluma until the 1900s and then the population began to increase. Even after the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, Santa Rosa steadily increased its population. In 1943, Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt was filmed in downtown Santa Clarita.1 Most of the construction was destroyed by an earthquake in 1969, however there are still some structures standing from the days of old, such as the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, and the Empire Building, complete with a gold-topped clock tower.
