Mental Health in Concord

Women who struggle with an eating disorder can join one of two support groups offered by the Renfrew Center of Charlotte. For adult women, the Eating Disorder Group helps participants understand the nature of their illness, particularly how their feelings and thoughts impact their relationship with food. The Adolescent Group challenges maladaptive thought patterns to help young women develop healthy eating habits. Both groups meet on a weekly basis and are led by licensed clinicians. The Mental Health Association of Central Carolinas is dedicated to reducing the stigma often associated with mental illness. As part of their efforts, the agency engages in community outreach programs that educate the public about mental illness, dispels incorrect information about mental illness, and offers stories of hope and recovery. Prevention is also a key component of their services, so individuals have the tools and resources they need to avoid a mental health crisis. To learn more, call 704-365-3454.3

To protect the emotional well being of each student, the Cabarrus County Schools have implemented a comprehensive anti-bullying campaign. Students are strictly forbidden from harassing other students, to include physical and emotional harm, as well as threatening or intimidating behaviors. Rather than simply punish children who bully others, the district has chosen to focus on intervention strategies to prevent bullying, as well as intervention methods to teach children how to behave appropriately with regard to their peers. Contact the school district at 704-795-4505 for additional details.4

Current Initiatives

The North Carolina Solutions Initiative was created to help meet the mental health needs of individuals in crisis. Reducing the reliance on emergency rooms for behavioral health crises is a primary focus of the initiative. Instead, the initiative's partners are working to develop a collaboration of local mental health providers who can respond to emergency situations quickly, thus unburdening emergency rooms and getting individuals in crisis de-escalated and back home in a more efficient manner. Mental health crisis services in the state are publically funded as well, which further negates the need for an emergency room visit for a behavioral health emergency.5
