Danville is located in the San Ramon Valley with around 42,000 people. The town has not incorporated but is considered an upscale suburb of Oakland and San Francisco. There are many exclusive and expensive houses that are located in Danville, while still preserving the town’s characteristics. Even though Danville is small, it is fairly self-sufficient with plenty of shopping, but only a couple of commercial centers.1 However, the shopping is mainly little shops versus the heavy-duty shopping that brings a lot of visitors, such as shopping malls. The downtown is considered rustic, bringing in visitors for its dining and shopping. The town has implemented strict restrictions for large development in order to keep its quaint charm. Even though the town does not have its own medical center, there are plenty nearby when the need occurs. This is a charming town that is perfect for an afternoon of shopping, followed by a quick bite to eat.
Mental Health in Danville
Danville is one of the wealthiest cities in California and also one of the most visited, due to its large number of country clubs and expensive real estate. The high quality of life in Danville has been maintained over the years, and the poverty rate for Contra Costa County is generally quite low, at 9.4 percent.2 This is, in fact, the second lowest value for the state of California. Statistics have shown that the mental illness rate is proportional to the poverty rate.
Thus, the overall mental illness rate for Contra Costa County is quite low. However, diseases such as autism, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder are still found, although in a very small percentage of the citys population.
The reason for the low mental illness statistics could be attributed to the excellent facilities available for Contra Costa County residents. The Contra Costa Crisis Center is always available for citizens in need of help during crisis situations, such as suicides, domestic violence, financial crisis, and general counselling. The center can be contacted 24 hours a day and their crisis line is 847-697-2380.3 Anxiety Disorders Association of America also operate in the county and will refer you immediately to a physician who specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders. They can be contacted at 240-485-1001.4
Current Initiatives
California has recently seen an increase in mental health awareness and a lot of initiatives have been created to help treat patients who suffer from mental illnesses. Governor Jerry Brown proposed a new $106.8 billion budget plan in January 2014. The budget would be spent on schools, welfare, and health care facilities in the state of California. The governor also proposed an additional $760 million for spending on mental health, substance abuse, and dental care.5
