I believe that our struggles with mental health can often make us think we are outside looking in. Different. Broken. The Black Sheep. When we learn how to change our view of our unique challenges or experiences they can become strengths and lose their power over us.

For people who love to get outdoors, the region of Amarillo, TX has plenty to offer. The Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a great place to start. The equestrian center inside the park offers the chance to experience the area just like the cowboys did. Families can enjoy a guided tour, wagon rides, campfire breakfasts and more. If all that riding tires your group out, cabins and campsites are available. Another destination in the city is the Amarillo Botanical Gardens.1 For a small fee, families can learn about native plants. Leashed pets are also allowed to join in the fun. The site has several different components. The Mary E. Bivins Tropical Conservatory replicates the climate in the tropics. In addition to the large collection of specimens, the building is a green design and is extremely energy efficient. The garden areas showcase many different classes of plants. Each year a plant sale is held for local gardeners to pick up new plants to complete their home landscape. Field trips are offered to local schools at a discounted rate as well. Adult education classes are also conducted throughout the year. Learn how to grow roses in the local climate or meet with the county extension agent all while enjoying the natural beauty of the grounds. Not surprisingly, many groups rent space at the site for special events like weddings.

Strong, stable communities are built on mutual understanding. Amarillo (and Texas as a whole) features an intriguing blend of cultures. Integration is key to keeping the often felt emotional stress of muticultural living at bay. In particular, Hispanic heritage has contributed a great deal to the region. The Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce works with local businesses and the community as a whole to plan and sponsor events for the entire community, like the 2014 Color Run, the Cinco de Mayo celebration, and the annual Beef-a-Thon for charity. The AHCC is a pivotal force multicultural integration in the community. For more information on upcoming events and programs, call 806-379-8800.

Current Initiatives

The Downtown Women’s Center of Amarillo is helping to address issues of homelessness in the community via transitional housing, low-income housing, job training, employment opportunities, and case management5. The physical and vocational needs are just some of the many issues that can cause homelessness. Mental health issues combined with addiction often accompany people who are in this situation. The transitional housing program helps those who are currently homeless find a home in Amarillo with rent based on a sliding income scale. DWC’s own Meridian Apartments provide a positive living environment for low-income individuals.
