Aaron Mitchum, LPC

Aaron Mitchum, LPC, Psychoanalytic Candidate

I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Kansas (that's what the "LPC" after my name means) and I studied at Mid-America Nazarene University (MNU) under Earl Bland, PsyD (a renown psychotherapist who now resides in Anaheim, CA). In addition to my initial graduate training I am currently a psychoanalytic candidate at the Brookhaven Institute for Psychoanalysis And Contemporary Theology (BIPACT). This means I am in a three year intensive training course to become certified as a psychoanalyst. This higher level training prepares me for working with deep traumas, issues and hurts in peoples lives. If you are interested in doing an analysis with me, please contact me. Currently I have some spots open, and while I am still in training the rate will be reduced. Professionally, I am a part of a group of therapists in Kansas City called, Serenity Life Resource Center. See more about them at www.serenitylifekc.org.

Since fit is important in finding the right therapist, let me tell you a few personal things about me: I am married with two kids, I enjoy playing music, cycling and watching baseball . Additionally, I have written and published six books for teenagers through Barefoot Publishing and I am an adjunct professor at Mid-America Nazarene University in the undergraduate psychology department.

Counseling is a more short term based treatment for those who feel relatively healthy but want to work on a few things. This can range from one to several meetings and entail everything from simply being a place for you to be heard and understood to collaborating on problems and offering you tools to continue your work after counseling.

Psychotherapy is a more entailed and longer term process, one to two times a week for an extended time period, in which a deeper work of healing is the goal. We all have missing pieces, life isn't perfect. So we adapt. Unfortunately though, much of our adapting requires giving up valuable parts of us. Psychotherapy is about finding those pieces, as tricky as it can be, and bringing them back in so that you can be whole again. In psychotherapy the relationship itself is the biggest tool of change. Though insight happens and tools can be offered, the way we connect and relate is the biggest factor in change. This is because feeling real, vitalized, balanced and confident, in a sustained manner, is not something we develop or grow on our own, it takes being related to in humanizing ways (especially during those moments when we feel the most vulnerable or upset). I offer an environment that helps people feel secure enough to bring the long put away parts of themselves, that had previously felt dismissed or unwanted, into the relationship. Which is what has to happen in order for real inner change to occur. Click here to view a helpful video on psychotherapy.

Ages 25 and Up

I often work with adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders, relationships (i.e. "it's hard to make or keep relationships" or "I keep making destructive relationships"), listlessness or feeling stuck, a lack of empathy, ultra sensitivity to feeling hurt or rejected by others. I also work with those who would say they don't know who they are or that they feel much younger on the inside then they are on the outside.

I utilize a contemporary psychoanalytic approach to working with individuals. This means I work with you to understand and heal the roots of issues and problems. I do not seek to dissect people and point out all that's wrong with them (that's the old model that says insight alone is what cures). I come from a current stand point that uses empathy to see people in light of their whole self and story and developmental psychology to respond to people in ways that, along with giving insight, helps put them back to together (instead of pulling them apart).

Married | Pre-marital | Partnership

Whether it's conflict, infidelity, boredom, or recovering from traumatic experiences I work with couples in a way that helps people recognize what is happening underneath the surface of conflict (it's never just about the toothpaste) and how those experiences connect to earlier formative experiences in life. This helps people to feel more balanced in their emotions during conflict as well as increases their ability to be there for their partner when they need them. The insight I offer, communicated through empathic responses, helps people stop re-enacting painful experiences of loss and disappointment and begin communicating and relating to each other in new trusting ways that make sense to both people.

Teens & Adolescents

Ages 12 - 25

I love teenagers and adolescents! I have been working with teens and adolescents for over fifteen years. Whether it's problems with anxiety, depression, identity issues, deliberate self harm (cutting, etc.), eating disorders, relationship problems with parents or friends, or trouble in school I work with teens and adolescents in a way that allows them to be understood for their heart, not just their behavior. In doing so I often can help teens rebound again. When I can, I also involve parents by facilitating conversations between them and their teen(s), as well as through coaching them on how to work with the healthy human development of their teens, not against it.
