Education & Credentialing
Alicia Muñoz graduated with her Masters Degree in
Mental Health and Wellness Counseling from New York University. She is a Virginia Licensed Professional Counselor, a certified Imago Couples therapist and a Level II trained AEDP therapist.
Alicia has been treating individuals and couples, and
helping people improve marriages, for nearly a decade. She has facilitated
open-ended and time-limited groups with a focus on issues ranging from assertiveness skills to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In couples counseling, she creates the safety necessary for couples to lower their defenses and explore their defensive patterns with curiosity and compassion. Whether the main issue
is a lack-luster marriage or partnership, desire discrepancy, infidelity, depression, anxiety, low
self-esteem, interpersonal problems, obsessive-compulsive thinking and
behaviors, or substance abuse, her approach centers on helping clients access
and utilize their strengths while decreasing self-sabotaging behaviors. Alicia
has experience treating trauma survivors in a city hospital as well as
individuals with co-morbid disorders.
Alicia helps her clients become better educated about their
individual and relational survival strategies through the latest research as
well as helping clients tune in to their own untapped wisdom, spiritual
resources, and inner felt sense. She draws from a variety of therapies,
including Imago Therapy, AEDP, sex therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy and body-oriented therapies such as
Focusing and Eastern mindfulness practices. Clients learn to navigate
challenging situations and find appropriate solutions that make it possible to
enjoy life more fully. Priority is given to experiencing emotions in a safe context. Problem areas are also explored and understood and goals are set for therapy. Alicia collaborates with clients on steps toward reaching goals.
