What Is Equine-Assisted Therapy?
Equine-Assisted Mental Health (EAMH) sessions involve a client working toward their therapeutic goals through interactions with both a horse and a therapist. It involves activities (such as grooming, feeding, haltering and leading a horse) that are supervised by a mental health professional. Over time, clients are supported in developing a relationship with one or several horses, and it is through guided exploration of this relationship that the therapeutic work occurs. EAMH can be a highly rewarding way to develop insight into current difficulties as well as focus on resolutions. Some clients find that they are able to face their issues faster and with more motivation than in a traditional office-based therapy setting.

The majority of our EAMH work involves being with the horse on the ground. However, if the client is interested and it seems like it may be beneficial to therapeutic progress, he or she may sit on or ride the horse once a relationship has been formed.
