Welcome to my Theravive profile, and thank-you for visiting.  Please do not hesitate to contact me, and remember, there are never any bad questions.
I have helped 1000s of children, adolescents, and adults cope with a variety of life challenges during my 20 plus years as a social worker.  Many clients come to see me because they are feeling "stuck", "overwhelmed", "hopeless", "directionless", "alone", and often, "misunderstood".  Some people may not even know "what is wrong" but feel that something needs to change.  The most common "issues" that I see in my practice include anxiety, depression, stress, borderline personality disorder, trauma, LGBTQ, substance abuse, self-criticism, perfectionism, life transitions, work-life balance, parenting, bullying/harassment, anger management, family of origin, behavioural issues related to ADHD/ASD, social skills and emotional regulation.
When clients come for counselling, we work together to identify your strengths, areas of concern, treatment goals, and a road map towards recovery.  I believe that clients should always have opportunities to learn new skills and coping strategies during sessions and have opportunity to explore those skills outside of session.  If the strategies do not work, don't worry, we can go back to the drawing board and find new ones to practice.  Each session starts with a review of the previous session, and identifies goals for the current session.  We go at a rate and rhythm that feels safe and respectful for you.
I have been trained in a variety of psychotherapy approaches that are called "evidence based" or "best practices".  What this simply means is that approaches I use in therapy have been well researched and have been found to have the best outcomes for clients with x "issue".  When you go see your doctor, you want to be offered the best medications or treatment available.  Psychotherapy should be no different.  As well, the approaches I use in psychotherapy are collaborative, client centred, and goal oriented with measurable outcomes.  Some approaches I like to use are strength based, Narrative, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Attachment Based Trauma Therapy.  I am a strong believer in life long learning and professional development, and dedicate a significant amount of time each year to ensure my skills and knowledge are current and ever evolving.
I completed my MSW at Carleton University in 2003/04 and have a detailed work and volunteer background.  My start to Social Work was very humble, when I worked in the homeless shelters for five years.  During these years, I developed strong communication skills, an ability to quickly build rapport with people from all walks of life, a deep understanding of the impact of trauma, mental health, substance abuse, and chronic illness on the quality of life of individuals.  After leaving the homeless shelters, I worked in child welfare for 3 years where I learned about family systems, how parents often struggled with their own challenges while parenting their own children, and honed my assessment skills.  I later worked at Canadian Mental Health Association and the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre for a combined 16 years working with people with complex mental health issues. In 2014 I began my part time private practice and have now grown it to full time.
I am a member of the OCSWSSW in good standing, have clinical supervision monthly with a psychologist, and am part of two peer supervision groups that meet weekly/monthly, have professional liability insurance, issue receipts for CRA health care costs or insurance benefits, and have a clean Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check.
