This is how my journey started.
As a paramedic since 2000, I have witnessed both the beauty and the tragedy of the beginning and the end of life. I have been a first responder at countless events and experienced firsthand what it’s like to make tough decisions and, at times, feel helpless. I have personally dealt with the overwhelming symptoms that can arise in the aftermath of being involved with a traumatic event. When I reached out for help, I was frustrated as the mental health professional did not understand what it was like to be a first responder. I remember thinking how wonderful it would be to work with someone who “got it”. That was the beginning of the journey that brought me to where I am now.
The other benefit of working as a paramedic, is that I may present different perspectives than other therapists, especially for those who have not been employed in the emergency services field. Furthermore, the experience as a paramedic allows me to be able to understand medical terminology, medications and some procedures. This knowledge will allow me to communicate clearly if there were ever a time in which you may require me to collaborate with your physical and/or mental health care team.My therapeutic approaches.
My primary approach is body-centered, as psychological trauma affects not only the mind, it affects the body and the nervous system. Somatic approaches to counselling work with the body’s own survival mechanisms to effectively process traumatic experiences. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which works directly with thoughts and emotions, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) which includes the added benefit of mindfulness and meditation.My professional bio.
I graduated from Yorkville University with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology in 2016, and am a professional member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. I have nearly two decades of experience in the emergency medical services field as a Primary and Advanced Care Paramedic. I have volunteered with a peer support team for over 15 years which ignited an aspiration to acquire the education and experience to work with clients who have experienced psychological trauma.
