About Me:

I am described by clients as a warm, non-judgmental person with a genuine desire to help people make positive changes in their lives.  I believe my clients are the experts in their own lives.  I use my counselling skills and their personal agency to help them make positive life changes.  I have training and extensive experience working with adolescent and adult clients, and specialize in issues related to depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, stress, youth issues, child-parent family issues, school difficulties, separation/divorce transition, grief /loss, chronic illness/pain and vocational/career exploration.  Known for my caring nature and approachability, I specialize in working with individuals who are hesitant or new to working with a counsellor.
I obtained my Bachelor''s degree in Psychology and History and my Master''s degree in Counselling Psychology from Simon Fraser University.  I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor in good standing with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (#3441).  I also completed the Professional Development Program at SFU in the International Teacher Education Module, and have been a member of the BC Teacher Regulation Branch for twenty years. In addition to my counselling private practice work with The Change Agency, I have also been a counsellor at the Art Institute of Vancouver, and currently also work as a counsellor with a large public school district.
I worked as a Faculty Associate and Program Coordinator in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University for five years. I have been invited to give lectures, workshops and live interviews on issues related to counselling and education at: University of British Columbia, University of British Columbia (Okanagan) University of Alberta, University of Saskatchewan, Thompson Rivers University, The Art Institute of Vancouver, Northern Lights College (Dawson Creek), and CBC Radio Vancouver (The Early Edition with Rick Cluff).

Here is what some of my clients have said about our work together:

"Our relationship was in rough shape when we came to you.  We learned from you the tools to communicate in healthy and effective ways.  The tension in the house that used to be there is now gone."

"I sought out counselling with Colin following one of the lowest points in my life. Previous to our sessions, I was unsure whether counselling would help me resolve my problems. I had this idea that I could figure things out on my own. Initially, we met consistently for five months. Colin's nonjudgmental and compassionate approach resonated with me. He was able to listen actively and provide thoughtful insight. However, what was most striking about Colin's approach was that it was real. I knew he truly empathized with me. Each hour that was spent in counseling was an hour of safe space to speak about problems I could not articulate to others. It has been a year and a half since my first session with Colin. For all the materialistic things I buy and the occasional elusive goals I set for myself, counseling has made the most positive impact on my outlook in life. Thank you Colin."

"My work with Colin helped me through a major life transition. Colin supported me during a time when I no longer felt capable of coping on my own and helped me explore alternative ways to better manage my stress and reduce my anxiety. Thanks to my therapy with Colin, I developed a stronger sense of self-worth and became more secure in my decision-making process. Thank you Colin for your guidance and support!"

“Your work with us helped us see and understand each other in ways that we could not imagine before coming to you for help with our relationship. It has reset our relationship and with our improved communication and insight, we feel the happiness we felt when we first met each other.”

"You helped me grieve when my father passed away when I was going to school at the Art Institute of Vancouver and I do not think I could have gone through it without you, thanks!"

"I just wanted to say hi and let you know that I have been feeling a lot better lately and have not only been finding myself to be not only more just generally confident, but also have been finding it immeasurably easier be at ease with many situations. So in light of that, I just wanted to say thank you."

"I know you are blessed because you are doing something you love to do and it must be so rewarding to do what you do. That is what you have helped me strive for, to see rewards in what I have achieved and feel good in doing it. Thank you Colin!"

"Thank you for your help. I do appreciate all that you have done for me and know that you have truly helped me in my progression."
