Hi, I'm Dean, I provide Addiction Recovery Counseling services. First I want to acknowledge that you are here looking to better you life. It takes a lot to reach out and ask for help and then follow through. You should feel encouraged.
My guarantee to you is that I will do everything I can to ensure that you get value out of every interaction with me. I have developed a Holistic 12-Step Alternative Approach that will teach you about Core Recovery Issues and how to unwind and dissolve them. Getting to your Core Recovery Issue(s) is essential since the substance is never the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. The real problem is always a Core Issue and Core Issues are always emotional and/or beliefs about yourself and the world (and beliefs are emotional).
I utilize a Collaborative Conversational Model grounded in intentional authentic presence. I am interested in you and your story and helping you unwind it to find the meaning and message that is there for you. I am not going to pathologize you or diagnose you. I am going to treat you like a competent human being who has the ability to muster all the resources required to live a life of recovery defined as: A process of change where individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. That says absolutely nothing about NOT using drugs or alcohol!  Not using drugs or alcohol is a THANKLESS TASK!  Just the thought of waking up every morning and saying, "Just for today I am not going to use," is enough to make you want to drink!  Counting days of sobriety falls in the same category. EXHAUSTING!

I want you to wake up in the morning and think about the POSITIVE things your are going to do! Every day is a possibility and you get to choose what you bring with you into that future possibility. Imagine that! Truly powerful when you can own that experience. I will show you how and teach you the tools so you can. We will look at why you are here, what you want to do, and how you can get there. This is simply a life vision or life purpose and having one is essential to recovery. I'll help you uncover yours.
So here's what you'll get from me:
Non-judgmental - I've either done it myself, or had clients that have done it, and I've yet to have a client who I thought was any worse than I ever was.
Always Learning - I am always learning and will show you how having this perspective will make life more interesting and keep healthy levels of dopamine (the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure that all drugs release) flowing in your brain. I am also always aware of the convergence happening in any situation, that is, your past propelling you into the future. I look forward to discovering with you who you are and how you want to be. I will teach you the methods that facilitate your own story coming together in an AMAZING way you may not have ever been able to imagine.
Practical Applications of Spiritual Care & Science - I pull everything together in a holistic way and you will see how it fits. Brain Science - you will learn the mechanism in your brain that breaks in addiction and why you have probably tried to quit on your own and couldn't stay quit while you may have had family members who used drugs or abused alcohol and they were able to quit. AA talks about the 'Disease Concept' of addiction, it's just a concept - a brilliant one given what they knew back in 1935; I will teach you the brain science. The most up to date info that we know today and how it applies to your recovery. Information doesn't get anyone sober or keep anyone sober. That is where the Spiritual Care comes in and for me that translates to emotional well-being. It doesn't matter what beliefs you have or if you have none at all, you will learn to manage your emotions in a healthy way and to ultimately love and accept your Self. That is the real secret to long-term recovery: to love and accept yourself. It takes time, but you can do it.
Integrative & Trauma-informed Theoretical Orientation -
  • Jungian theory of personality, past insight, and archetypes, including the view of addiction as a form of Initiation;
  • Attachment Theory - how you connected with your primary caregivers as a child and whether you felt the world is a safe place or not;
  • Bowen Family Systems which tells us that we are products of a family system and that we must look at our relationships to understand the individual behavior;
  • Choice Theory also known as Reality Therapy which says we have basic needs and we will choose to act in ways to get those needs met;
  • Solution Focused, which is all about doing. Awareness without action gets me nowhere.

Education & Know-How - I come to the table with a background that is interdisciplinary. I have a breadth of experience and see the connections and weave them together in a coherent way that will offer you an expanded awareness of what is possible. I have a Master's Degree from the University of Dubuque in Iowa. My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas at Austin. I am a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in Texas.
Call me for a FREE initial assessment. I don't put a time constraint on you, it may be five minutes or fifty minutes. I am open ended and operate from a place of contingency. I go with the flow and will make sure whatever interaction we have is complete. This is my passion (if you couldn't already tell). When you call please leave a message. I am often in sessions or teaching classes.  I return all calls promptly when you leave a message. Or schedule yourself in my virtual office: SIRIUS*RECOVERY Office
