Dr. Fabiana Franco is a clinical professor of psychology at The George Washington University who sees private clients in New York and Washington DC. In her work, she strives to combine the two elements of effective psychotherapy: academic expertise and warm, collaborative client-therapist relationship. Dr. Franco has extensive experience providing clinical diagnoses in a number of settings. With new clients, she begins therapy with a comprehensive evaluation, allowing her to begin working with the most effective therapeutic method. Dr. Franco is also known for her ability to combine creativity with the rigorous use of evidence-based techniques.

Academic interests and specializations

In her both her academic career and work with clients, Dr. Franco has taken a keen interest in Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or C-PTSD. This condition is similar to the better known PTSD, but is produced by prolonged interpersonal trauma, rather than a single spectacular event. While C-PTSD is starting to receive the recognition it deserves, there are still relatively few psychologists who are specifically trained to treat it and underdiagnosis remains rife. Dr. Franco aims to increase awareness of the importance of understanding C-PTSD and has published a number of articles on the subject.

Another area of interest for Dr. Franco is behavioral medicine, which seeks to integrate psychology and medicine. Increasingly, in the 21st century, the most serious and widespread health problems are closely related to lifestyle and are not responsive to conventional medical intervention. Behavioral medicine utilizes the potential to help patients make lifestyle changes which make a marked difference to health outcomes through doctor-psychologist collaboration.

Dr. Franco's specialties are
  • C-PTSD and trauma

Dr. Franco is a regular attendee and speaker at conferences and has given numerous presentations and workshops. She also supervises doctoral and post-doctoral students on an ongoing basis. Dr. Franco believes it is important for therapists to maintain a good working knowledge of psychological research in order to best serve their clients.
