Heather Goodwin Creative & Expressive Arts Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
I am a creative and expressive arts therapist who uses a variety of art forms, as well as mindfulness and talk-based therapy, in my work with clients. You don’t need experience in the arts in order for us to work together. I am relational and client-focused, so I take my lead from you. Depending on your needs, we could spend a lot of time in the arts, or very little.
When working in the arts, I work from a low-skill, high-sensitivity framework, meaning that it isn’t important to make ‘good art’, but rather to stay present, sensitive and curious as the process unfolds. In our work together, we may engage in anything from visual arts, to drama, movement, creative writing, or music. When we engage the arts, we move into the world of the imagination where surprises are more likely to occur and possibilities are opened up that had previously been hidden from us.
You don’t need a history or background in the arts, only a willingness and openness to explore creativity. When we begin using the arts, I will guide you in a way that is sensitive to your own concerns and curiosities.
I have worked with teens and adults in a variety of topics including:
- Emotional resilience
- Life transitions
- Grief & loss
- Gender & sexuality questions
- Attention deficit
My desire to become a creative and expressive arts therapist was born from the power that I have felt through the arts. I have experienced and witnessed how the arts can us to shift our stories and personal narratives into something that has beauty, power and fluidity. The arts can aide us to re-frame and re-shape the parts of our lives that have previously felt stuck, into something that we can nurture and engage with in a safer way. If this approach sparks anything in you – curiosity, excitement, or even dread – then perhaps there is something here for us to explore together.
