Specialties:  I work with individuals, couples, and families around a variety of mental health concerns, but specialize in working with women and adolescent girls who are experiencing struggles around body image, problematic eating behaviors/eating disorders, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and dealing with major life transitions. As women, we receive a wide variety of  messages about who we are vs. who we should be in the world and holding onto the shame this can create plays a large role in the development of mental health issues. Understanding the experiences that have shaped who you are today is an important step into interacting with yourself in different way.
Approach to Therapy:  Everyone goes through rough patches in life, and sometimes we're left feeling stuck. Substance abuse, depression, anxiety, anger, and stress can often be the result. This is often the point when we begin our search for help. Having someone who is willing to listen to what you are struggling with, help you clarify goals, break old habits, deal with any issues you feel are unresolved, and learn to handle stressful situations more effectively can be extremely helpful in navigating these challenges. I believe that creating a safe environment that allows for that experience to happen is the most important part of my work as a therapist.  I approach therapy believing you are the ultimate authority on your own experience and that a therapist serves as witness, narrator, teacher, advocate, or simply a kind presence - whatever is most helpful and needed for you at the time. My goal as a therapist is to help you step into a more positive relationship with yourself and others that impacts all areas of your life. I want you to step into living your best life-whatever that looks like for you!
Education:  I completed my graduate course work and clinical experience at Saybrook University after getting my CDP (chemical dependency professional) certificate and working at a mental health agency in that capacity for four years. Depending on the concerns you are bringing into therapy, I employ a variety of theories and techniques including: narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), family systems approaches, attachment theory, somatic work, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing techniques.
Getting Started:   I believe the most important part of the therapy process is you. Finding a therapist can be a daunting task and it's important that you find someone you can connect with, who can support you, and who has the experience to guide you through the challenges you are facing. If  it sounds like we might work well together feel free to connect with me to set up an initial appointment or ask me any questions you may have.
