If you struggle with anxiety or depression, you know how difficult it can be to cope. Anxiety is easy to recognize. We worry more, avoid difficult situations, and feel tense, awkward, or ineffective. Depression feels exhausting and hopeless. We judge ourselves and other people harshly, feel intense sadness, and become passive. It can feel like we can't do anything right or that things never go our way. Imagine being more active, skilled, and competent, communicating more effectively in relationships, being more productive at work or school, and feeling more satisfied with life.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression. CBT is an evidence-based treatment designed to help you think, feel, and function better. In our work together, we'll consider your unique goals and how to change patterns of thinking and behavior to achieve them.
The cognitive part of CBT involves exploring excessively negative beliefs that contribute to intense anger, anxiety, and depression. We'll discuss strategies you can use to think about yourself, your relationships, and the future in more realistic and practical ways. The behavioral element focuses on increasing personally rewarding behaviors while decreasing activities that lead to emotional problems. We’ll also think about the conditions at home, work, school or other environments that make it difficult to change. Using a solution-focused approach, we can evaluate how to replace destructive behavior with pleasurable and productive activities by addressing both the behavior itself and obstacles in the natural environment.

CBT is not designed for you to take on the values of your therapist. Instead, CBT is nonjudgmental and client-centered. Sessions are systematic and structured, but the work is collaborative, designed to help you make choices that prepare you for life satisfaction and fulfillment.

I'm a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. I offer evidence-based, professional treatment in the context of a collaborative, supportive, and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship.
In addition to my clinical work, I’m a lecturer in the psychology and kinesiology departments at California State University, Chico, where I teach courses in abnormal psychology, personality psychology, sport and exercise psychology, wellness, community health promotion, dance, research methods, and statistics.
I also have a self-help blog at Psychology Today called CBT and Me: An Evidence-Based Approach to Personal Health, where I write about using the principles of CBT in your day-to-day life.
