About John Gallagher, LMHC:  John earned his masters degree in counseling from the University of Virginia in 1989. He has been licensed in the State of Florida since 1998.  After a productive 15 years as a therapist with Florida Hospital Medical Psychology and the Florida Hospital Employee Assistance Program, John established his own successful private practice in Winter Park, Florida.  John specializes in couple and individual therapy.  John is a Certified Addictions Professional and a certified practitioner of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).  John also has extensive training in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT).

Couples Therapy:  Couples face many challenges including affairs, anger, addiction, career problems, children, loss of intimacy, in-laws, medical problems etc...  Unfortunately too many relationships needlessly break-up or survive in a state of perpetual unhappiness.  There is a better way.  John practices Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT).EFT is a proven counseling approach which helps couples change patterns of conflict and disconnection.  Clients learn to speak with one another in "softer" and more genuine ways.  This "softer" and more collaborative communication style allows couples to resolve old conflicts and create a more loving "relational dance" based on trust and mutual support.  EFT is only appropriate for  partners have a genuine desire to work on the relationship.  You can read more about Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy in the book Hold Me Tight by Dr. Sue Johnson.

Individual Therapy with Men:  John specializes in helping men learn new and more productive ways of coping with life challenges such as anxiety, depression, anger, addiction, career problems, grief and midlife issues.  Although men in our society are less likely totake advantage of counseling services, it is John's experience that men can benefit a great deal from therapy. John uses a variety of individual counseling approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, and Mindfulness/Meditation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):  This form of therapy helps clients become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking styles.  Clients learn to view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in more effective ways .  This form of therapy often involves homework assignments.  Clients are encouraged to make self-observations and practice new skills between sessions.  A large amount of scientific studies have demonstrated the usefulness of CBT in treating depression, anxiety/panic, substance abuse, sleep problems, and pain problems.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR):  This therapy approach has been proven effective for the treatment of recent and long standing emotional trauma and anxiety.  It has helped millions of men and woman cope with stressful life events.  It incorporates elements from many different therapy approaches and follows a standard treatment protocol utilizing bilateral eye movement or tactile/audio stimulation.

Mindfulness/Meditation:  This well established therapeutic approach help's clients learn to observe their perceptions, thoughts, and emotions in the present moment while maintaining an attitude of self -acceptance.  As part of mindfulness work clients typically taught relaxation and meditation techniques.  Mindfulness has been effectively applied to many psychological conditions including anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress and pain control.  Mindfulness is often used as an adjunct treatment with the other individual therapy approaches discussed above.
