I have 30+ years of experience helping folks access their own answers.  My philosophy:

  • We are all worthy of feeling alive, healthy, whole, successful.
  • We each carry our own resources and answers within.
  • Change occurs in an instant, while preparation for that change is sometimes difficult/painful, requiring time and focused effort.

My undergraduate work is a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from IL Wesleyan University.  Completed in 1981, my Master's Degree in Psychiatric - Community Mental Health Nursing is from the University of Illinois, Medical Center, Chicago.  Included were clinical tracks in Family Systems Therapy, Individual Therapy, and Group Therapy.  Because of the multiple sciences base of nursing education, and the focus on prevention and building on strengths, nursing is uniquely positioned as a foundation for successful psychotherapy.

I have maintained Solution Focused Counseling, a successful private practice since 1983.  Prior to that I was the first head nurse on the first psychiatric inpatient unit in Bloomington-Normal, followed by employment at the McLean County Mental Health Center and Dr.s Bey and Chapman as a Psychiatric Nurse.  After completion of my Master's Degree, I again worked for the same psychiatrists as a Nurse-Psychotherapist, as well as holding a part time adjunct clinical faculty position at IWU in psychiatric nursing.  I again held an adjunct position at the IWU School of Nursing teaching Human Sexuality for several semesters around 2000.

I hold the Advanced Practice Nursing license (A.P.N.) in the State of Illinois, as well as Board Certification in Adult Psychiatric - Mental Health Nursing with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  I hold Master's Certification in NLP, and 2 year certification as an Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner.  My professional memberships include the American Nurses' Association, Association of Humanistic Psychology, Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Fraternity, and Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nurses (ISAPN).

In the world according to Tornquist :), therapy occurs in 3 stages:  Symptom Relief, Secondary Prevention, and Life Enrichment.  First, you want relief from whatever version of unhappiness you are experiencing.  Secondly, most folks want to prevent the same thing happening again, and/or have confidence in their ability to handle such experiences more constructively.  Thirdly, a few folks want to go further to deepen and enrich themselves/their relationships beyond the absence of symptoms.

Each client that comes through my door has a unique set of issues/personality/history etc.  We start with what you want to be different - what will your evidence be when you have achieved what you came for?  Then, and only then, can we set about creating the path from here to there.  My extensive experience and understanding of the human condition, together with my wide variety of ongoing continuing education experiences, yield a bottomless tool/toy bag, and uniquely prepare me to guide your healing journey.

Thus, you bring a desire and willingness to change specific thoughts, feelings, behaviors, attitudes, or beliefs which you recognize are not working effectively.  I bring an expertise in: 1 - clarification of the problem, it's sources, and desired results; 2 - assessment of strengths and weaknesses; and 3 - use of the art and science of the therapeutic process.

You have taken a bold first step to search for just the right therapist.  Call me to schedule an initial appointment, or for a complimentary 15 minute phone consultation, so you can discover whether I am that "right" therapist for you.
