Hello and welcome!
I named my practice In Tandem Counseling because my husband once traded a GPS unit I bought him (pre-smart phone ) for a tandem bike. We loved our tandem bike, but it caused us some conflict as we had to learn how to communicate clearly, work together as a team, and offer each other support, especially going up hills on a 1970's Schwinn Twin with only one speed! (He used to yell from the front, "Are you pedaling?" no matter how much my legs were burning!) My approach to therapy is very similar. If I am working with couples, I want to help create that same dynamic of healthy communication, team work, and support. But even if I am working one on one with an individual, I think therapy is about team work, support, and healthy communication. You get to tell me what you need and want, too! And when we work together, we go new places!
Even though I now have a professional license to offer therapy, I have essentially been providing support and counseling for most of my life. People have always told me that I am a good listener and help them feel heard without judgment. My journey to become a therapist stemmed out of realizing that people naturally wanted to share their hurts and struggles with me, and I wanted to be more competent and equipped to offer support.
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) I approach therapy from the belief that we are all a product of our experiences, our families, and the people we have met and interacted with along the way. Each of our pains or struggles is a compilation of many different interactions that form our own beliefs and thoughts about ourselves and the world. We are complicated and beautiful people!
I do not believe that people are broken and need to be fixed. I think we are all acting out of our best abilities in any given moment, and that it is possible that the ways we learned to function as children or in an earlier relationship no longer satisfy us or may even make things worse. In order to change this behavior, we need to understand the roots of our belief and work together to find new ways to meet our current goals. This is possible through sharing your story, finding ways to be vulnerable, and commitment to change. One of the reasons I love being a therapist is that I get the pleasure of joining your journey as you discover new, lovable, and valuable qualities about yourself!
I have worked in a variety of settings as therapist, including private practice intensive outpatient at the hospital, and adolescent residential treatment. I enjoy having multiple people in the room, working with families and couples, and want to help create space where everyone feels heard. I am trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and am Prepare and Enrich Certified. I have worked with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, self harming, suicidal ideation, family conflict, marriage conflict, infidelity, trauma/PTSD, borderline personality disorder, and premarital counseling.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I hope to get the chance to meet you and do this exciting and challenging work together!
