Burlington is located on the western end of Lake Ontario and the only member of the Halton Regional Municipality and Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area.  The population in Burlington is around 165,000 people.  The area was first deeded to Chief Joseph Brant in 1798 and named the “Brant Block” when settlers started arriving.  The town was made bigger in 1874 when Wellington Square and Port Nelson communities were incorporated into the Village of Burlington, which later became a town in 1915.  Burlington did not officially become a city until 1974. This is also when the Regional Municipality of Halton was created.  The city’s growth is largely due to its location, which is between Hamilton and Toronto, where a lot of commuters live.1 The city’s demography has continued to diversify since the inception of a twin city declaration signed with Itabashi, a ward in Tokyo, Japan in 1989.

Since Burlington is located near some large industries in southern Ontario, the city’s economy is fairly diverse including the relationship Burlington has with the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton, not to mention the intricate transportation infrastructure.  The main industry around Burlington, and is attributed to the majority of their growth, is the automotive and manufacturing industries. Since the city is suburban, it is very heavily car dependent.  The political structure in  Burlington includes a mayor, four members of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and one member of the Conservative Party of Canada that represents Burlington in the House of Commons.  An interesting tidbit—John Turmel, who has run as an independent candidate over several elections, holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the most elections contested and the most elections ran and lost as an independent candidate.

Mental Health in Burlington

Ontario is home to the Burlington area, which is a bustling city filled with people, businesses, and things to do. The community is very involved with many plans for the near future, as well as long-term goals to improve the quality of life overall. Currently, however, there have been some concerns as to mental health.

In this area, mental health is very important. One major mental illness that has caused problems for residents is addiction. Even though drugs, alcohol, sex, or other more typical' addictions are not so rampant in this area, there are concerns about spending addictions that can lead to credit problems.

The OACCS is a credit counselor that is trusted and has helped hundreds of people and is constantly available to help many more; they can be reached at 1-888-7476-3328.2 If you have other mental health concerns, then you could consider calling the city's mental health helpline at 1-866-531-2600.3

Current Initiatives

The city of Burlington has many plans for improvement throughout the area. Over recent years, many important changes have already been made and they have helped to refresh the neighborhoods in many ways. In 2012, residents may have noticed that the park equipment was replaced with new, better playground equipment. Roads have also been treated, to give a safer, smoother drive to the people of this area. Future plans include things like storm water management, the construction of new buildings for both business and residential purposes, and many different plans for upcoming years.4 These will help to improve the quality of life and make the community thrive in ways that it couldn't before.
