Oshawa is located on the shoreline of Lake Ontario with a population of around 140,000 people in the city, and 330,000 in the metropolitan area around the city.  It is the fourteenth largest city in Canada.  Choosing to utilize the skill of a counselor creates a unique partnership where you have a neutral person who is invested in you moving forward in your life.  The therapist you choose will deliver robust counselling aimed at bringing your life through the issues and towards promise and greater potential.  As you work with your therapist, the counselling you will receive is tailored to your individual needs and based on fundamental principles of psychology.  The name is from Ojibwa, meaning “crossing to the other side of a river or lake”.  The city is known for having the Canadian division of General Motors Corporation, which is also a large contributor to the city’s economy.  General Motors established a plant there due to the city having McLaughlin Carriage Company, which was founded in 1876. General Motors Canada is headquartered in Oshawa, where Buick automobiles were manufactured.1 The home of the carriage company’s founder is now a national historic site and has been used as backdrops for Toronto film crews.  The city also has a thoroughbred horse breeding farm, the Windfields Farm, and is the birthplace of Canada’s most famous racehorse, Northern Dancer.

Oshawa started as a fur trading post, where beaver and other animal pelts were trapped by the local natives and traded with the voyagers.  Prior to the trading post being established in 1760, the Mississauga Indians would load furs into canoes and transport them down to the trading posts, which were located at the mouth of the Credit River.  The benefits of Christian counselling include a fresh viewpoint for a situation that may be quite confusing and overwhelming.  A values oriented therapist can provide expert counseling and therapy when you need it the most.   The area grew as a trading and export to include shipping salmon to the United States.  The growth of the trading business helped to grow the area where a lot of United Empire Loyalists emigrated from the United States in order to live under the British rule.  Later on, the Irish and French Canadians moved into the area.  The rapid growth also brought Cornish immigrants. It was during this time that the Governor granted land, which increased the population of the area.  A road was made from York to Kingston, which ran through the center of the city.

Mental Health in Oshawa

The city of Oshawa isone of the fastest growing cities in Canadaand is known as the Automotive Capital of Canada". It is alsothe home to many young college students and hard working families living on small incomes. In Oshawa, the burden of financial stress is something far too common. It is understandable that with large amounts of stress it is extremely easy to fall victim to addictions such as alcohol use and illicit drug use. According to a report published by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, use of drugs such as heroin and cannabis are prevalent and in some age groups, on a rising trend.2

Residents of Oshawa have access to many community resources that are able to aid anyone in need of rehabilitation and help those who want to gain insight on mental health and addictions in their area. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health website, camh.ca, offers the widest variety of online information ranging from articles on mental health, community programs, and addiction services and resources.3 If you or someone you know is having a problem with addiction in the Oshawa area and needs help, Pinewood Centre offers walk in treatment as well as a 24 hour crisis support line which can be reached at 1-888-881-8878.4

Current Initiatives

The Durham District School Board has initiated a five-year plan in their schools called Linking Healthy Minds for a Positive Future: Mental Health and Addictions Strategic Plan, 2013-2018." This plan, paired with their newly elected board member and mental health leader Allison Potts, will increase awareness of mental health and addiction in schools as well as help remove the negative stigmas attached to both. The goal is for every school district in Ontario to eventually have a mental health leader on each of their boards as well.
