My metaphor for life has been one of an ever-winding path that takes me to places that I would never have imagined. On that path I have encountered many amazing people and some incredible experiences. My travels have also included some unexpected detours. Many of these detours, though discouraging and overwhelming at the time, have been instrumental in shaping my life and the path I continue to walk today.
Sometimes detours become entirely new paths. As a parent of three children with global developmental disabilities, two of whom have Autism Spectrum Disorder, I realized that the lack of a genuinely empathetic support system created in me the need to forge a new path for myself. On this new path I learned the skills to help myself, and to navigate a system in order to better advocate for my family. I also encountered many individuals on the same journey needing the same information. I felt compelled to share what I knew, and quickly discovered that I needed to know even more. This began my formal education on the path to register as a psychologist.
Since that time I have completed my Disability Studies Diploma, a Degree in Community Rehabilitation, and a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology. I hold a professional associate membership with the Psychological Association of Alberta. In total I have over 20 years experience working with individuals, families, couples and children in numerous support settings. Some of these settings include the Calgary Catholic Board of Education, Michener Centre,
Government of Alberta and most recently, a private counselling practice.
Feedback from my clients confirms that my approach to therapy is collaborative and interactive. By assessing your "here and now" you may begin to gain relief from symptoms you are dealing with. You may also clarify deeply held cultural values and personal identities, as well as face work and life transitions more effectively.
My private practice lets me follow along the path others are walking and offer alternative means of navigating your own personal journey. Currently I offer therapy to individuals, families, couples, children and adolescents dealing with a variety of issues including relationship concerns, stress management, depression and anxiety. I am experienced in couple’s therapy, parent coaching, family therapy, designing intervention programs, behavioral consultation, school consultation, and collaboration with FSCD and other professionals.
I believe that therapy sessions should provide a space where one is encouraged to be oneself, directly experience what is happening, and reflect upon one's complex and, at times, conflicting thoughts and emotions. One can measure success not only by relief from current symptoms, but also by an increasing capacity to know yourself more deeply, to love who you are more fully, and to find greater fulfillment in the path that you choose to follow.
