Philosophy & Approach
In many ways, life is a result of the choices we make and the things we do in an attempt to cope with and survive the challenging parts of life. Sometimes life hits us a little harder than we are prepared to deal with on our own, and sometimes our best efforts to deal with life's problems unknowingly hurt us more than help us, leaving us stuck in patterns and cycles that cause us to feel confused, overwhelmed, and discouraged.
The good news is that you aren't alone. Everyone struggles. Everyone needs help at some point, and there is no shame in this. Research and my personal experience in working with lots of people clearly show that change IS possible and that there is good reason to believe that things can improve more quickly and easily with help than without help.
I am a Clinical Psychologist trained in a variety of therapies grounded in solid research. Simply put, together we will figure out what is wrong, what you'd like to see changed, and how you want those changes to look. Then we'll work as a team to put a plan together to get you “unstuck” so you can get where you want to be.
I use a variety of techniques to help people achieve their desired outcomes, although I rely heavily on EMDR and cognitive behavioral interventions. I believe that getting "unstuck" often involves confronting experiences we've had in our past, learning new skills, or changing how we think and behave in response to stressful experiences. I also believe that emotions will provide us with important information and can't be ignored; this means that we may have to talk about what feelings have been bubbling up, what has triggered them, and how we are going to address or resolve them.
I provide individual and group psychotherapy, and I specialize in the treatment of:
Trauma / PTSD / Other stress-related conditions
Veteran issuesFirst Responders
Anxiety (e.g., nervousness, panic, worry, phobia, fears...)
Adjustment issues (e.g., relationship ending, job change, life transitions…)
I do not specialize in couples/marital, child, or family therapies. I recommend you see a specialist for those issues.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): an evidence-based therapy for PTSD; EMDR has also been used to successfully treat multiple other conditions including grief, panic, phobias, anxiety, stress reduction, etc.
- Cognitive Processing Therapy: an evidence-based therapy for PTSD
- Prolonged Exposure: an evidence-based therapy for PTSD
- Veteran and First Responders Issues: I have worked at the Michael E. DeBakey VA since 2009 and have pursued advanced trainings on working with these communities
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: evidence based therapy for multiple emotional and behavioral conditions including anxiety, depression, grief, etc.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), all services are currently being provided via telehealth, and there is no re-opening date for in-office services at this time. Updates regarding this issue will be provided on my website (www.lisarobinsonphd.com). All telehealth sessions are conducted via HIPAA-secure video platforms. EMDR is available via Telehealth if clinically indicated and appropriate.
How to Schedule an Appointment
Making an appointment is easy. Call me at 713-922-5339 or register as a new client online via the link on my website (there’s a button that says ‘schedule an appointment’) and I will call you. My private practice hours are Mondays and Thursdays (and occasionally Friday afternoons on as-needed basis). I have a few Thursday evening appointment slots. Major credit cards are accepted for your convenience.
I’m a Tricare-approved provider, although I am considered out-of-network. All other people either use their out-of-network mental health benefits or pay out-of-pocket. Regardless of the type of insurance you have, my services are eligible for out-of-network insurance reimbursement if your plan offers such mental health coverage. Just check with your insurance company about your out-of-network benefits. If you aren't sure how to do this, there is some information on my website that can help you with this or you can call me with questions. Usually, I can electronically submit a claim for reimbursement on your behalf to your insurance company (which means little to no paperwork for you).
