The Counseling Process:
The relationship of your feelings, thoughts and behaviors are central to understanding the issues that affect successful outcomes, positive growth and change for life. Utilization of a variety of therapies which are most helpful for you could include but not limited to; Cognitive Behavior (CBT), Trauma Focus Cognitive Behavior (TFCBT), Inner Child therapy (ICT), Imago Therapy (IT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Solution Focus (SF), Systems Therapy (ST), and/or Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).
Therapy with children and adolescents can include interpersonal and behavioral skills utilizing play, therapeutic stories, creative arts, assertiveness and social skills development. Missing skills may include; asking for help, accepting redirection or feedback, proper attachment, self-regulation, misinformation and incorrect beliefs. Helping children and parents develop insight, positive connection and trusted communication skills are fundamental for healthy positive family experiences.
Substance abuse and/or “process” addictive behavior interventions can include Motivational Stages of Change Therapy, Stages of Recovery, evaluation of behavioral symptoms of addiction including diversity of patterns of use, social characteristics, dual diagnosis and needs assessments, harm reduction stress management and social skills training. Community reinforcement approaches include; Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Women for Sobriety, Moderation Management, Rational Recovery, Eating Disorder Alliance, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Twelve Steps, Al Anon, Al A-Teen and/or Celebrate Recovery when pertinent for the client and their family in maintaining support for abstinence and recovery.
Psychotherapy sessions in conjunction with other professional services may be identified as needed for the client, i.e. psychiatrist, primary care physician, nutritionist. Clients will be requested to secure supporting services to assist with their comprehensive care and safety if needed. Client strengths and motivation to succeed also helps in the healing and transformation process as they "grow in life with focus" to the next level of success.
The therapy process is designed to help you know there is hope and support - you are not alone! Whether the client is a child, teen, or adult, the incorporation of positive helpful family support system, or other supportive individual, is usually recommended and valued throughout therapy. Small groups can be complimentary to counseling and are on-going throughout the year for your support if desired. Small groups provide educational/ processing help with others, who like yourself, are interested in gaining information and sharing or hearing personal experiences. Some groups are designed for couples or parent/child interaction. Groups adhere to a focused topic and require strict adherence to guidelines which include confidentiality. Counseling sessions and/or groups may include helpful handouts, book studies, DVD/powerpoint presentations from a variety of expert sources. Bibliotherapy, journaling, and other meaningful take-home exercises may be included in counseling sessions and groups as well.
