Dr. Martin Resnick
Today’s increasingly demanding complex world presents us with many challenges. When confronted with the pressures of life many people need professional help with their personal problems. As we know problems can occur at home, school or at work. Usually we are able to handle these difficult challenges on our own, either by ourselves or with the help of family and friends. There are times, however, when life’s stresses and strains become overwhelming and too much to cope with and resolve. As a psychologist I help people deal with conflict and unhappiness so that they can make life more meaningful and satisfying. I provide safe and nonjudgmental counselling in a supportive environment to help you get back on the right track and achieve your goals. A variety of approaches are utilized to help relieve depression, anxiety, guilt and other emotional problems and psychological issues.
These issues include individual and family conflict, grief and bereavement, life transitions, and anxiety and depression. Other areas I focus on are fears and phobias as well as panic and pain management.
Treatment strategies I use among others include cognitive-behavioural, individual, Rogerian, psychodynamic, the teaching of assertiveness/self esteem skills, couple/marital therapy, visualization and hypnosis (if appropriate), all conducted within a solution-focused context. My overall goal is to help clients resolve issues and lead healthier, more meaningful and productive lives.
As a registered psychologist my fees are covered by a number of extended health care carriers, eg. Blue Cross, Manulife, Cooperators, ATC; but not OHIP. My fees are reasonable and negotiable and are well within the guidelines established by the Ontario Psychological Association.
I received my doctorate in Counselling Psychology at the University of Oklahoma and have specialized in children and adult disorders. I studied at The Child Study Center in Oklahoma City with the focus on children's disorders and at The Logansport State Hospital in Logansport, Indiana, specializing in adult disorders. I'm registered with The Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. I was the Senior Psychologist at The Credit Valley Hospital for 10 years from 1995 to 2005 and director of the CPA/APA Internship Training Program at this hospital. Prior to this, I worked for a number of years at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital as a supervising psychologist in the adult outpatients department.
I have presented workshops on stress, anxiety and grief, in addition to workshops on parenting and children's issues.
I have appeared on public media. I have also been interviewed by the Toronto Sun on a number of occasions and have given interviews on television; CHTV Hamilton, CKCO TV Kitchener, CP24 in Toronto as well as CBC National Radio Canada. I have given testimony as an expert witness in court cases both in Kitchener and Toronto (divorce, custody, pedophilia, assault and breaking and entering). I have taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Waterloo, Wilfred Laurier University and as a Fellow at Conestoga College.
