I have always had a heart for listening to people and working with youth. In 2011 I took a step toward using my passion for people in a professional manner, graduating from Briercrest Seminary with a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counselling, specializing in adolescent and young adult experiences. Since then I have worked both in private practice and within the Chinook School Division as a counsellor and a youth worker, helping couples, young adults, teenagers and youth to address their concerns and find ways toward personal growth and change. I am a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and currently working toward the designation of Certified Canadian Counsellor.
I am an empathetic, compassionate, and client-centred counsellor committed to listening to each client’s story and helping them develop the skills and tools they may need to continue on their journey toward personal growth and health. I believe that each client is unique, and that each client brings an expertise in their own specific experiences. Therefore, I see counselling as a dynamic experience of working-together.
Since having my own family, I have found a new passion for working with younger children growing alongside my love of working with young adults and adolescents. Younger children bring an energy and a call-it-like-it-is realness to counselling that encourages an atmosphere of creativity and play. In this atmosphere, counselling work can happen without feeling like “work.” With a hands-on play approach, children can be very quick to learn, and we both often enjoy the process of working on their problems.
While my training is in Narrative Therapy, I use a variety of approaches in my work including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Mindfulness, and Play Therapy. I work together with my clients on tailoring counselling to individual needs and circumstances. My goal is to help clients discover, utilize, and add tools to the strengths and wisdom they already possess, to achieve the change they are seeking.
My specializations include anxiety, anger management, stress management, parenting skills and support, self-harm, and sexual identity. I am committed to providing a safe and private place for people to come and explore their needs, and to find ways toward growth.
In 2018 I joined the team at the Swift Current Youth Initiative (SCCYI) at the Center, as the Youth and Family Counsellor. Our building is easily accessible in downtown Swift Current, SK at 55 1st Ave NE. While I do most of my counselling in-person in my office at The Center, I am also available for Tele-Mental Health via Zoom and/or email.
