Bakersfield has a rich musical heritage.  Buck Owens, a famous country music star, is from the city and he, with a group of musicians from the 1950’s and 1960’s, developed a type of music referred to as Bakersfield country.  The music is regarded as a honky-tonk spinoff and features pedal steel guitar, intense vocals and the Fender Telecaster (an electric guitar).  This helped establish the area as the third most prolific country music spot behind only Nashville and Texas.  Merle Haggard is also a product of the community.  One of country music’s most respected venues, the Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace, continues to showcase both up and coming and established country music acts.  Buck Owens’ eldest son, Buddy Alan, performs at the Crystal Palace regularly with his band, The Buckaroos.1

Mental Health in Bakersfield

Bakersfield is a rapidly growing city with a large Hispanic and Latino population.2 The city also has a growing number of young people, with nearly 40 percent of the city's residents under the age of 18. Other specialized groups include veterans, foreign-born citizens, and the elderly.3 The diverse nature of the city means various cultural experiences are available. In terms of mental health, practitioners must be respectful of the varying traditions and beliefs of each ethnic group. Since minorities typically suffer from mental illness to a greater degree, access to quality mental health care is very important.

The Kern County Mental Health Department delivers mental health services to the people of Bakersfield and the surrounding areas. The department's mantra of hope, healing, and community is reflected in the way they provide their services. Programs for children, adults, and the elderly are available. Substance abuse recovery services are also offered. Those in need of legal assistance or require help finding educational or job opportunities will also find those services at Kern County Mental Health. For additional information about their programs, contact the department at 661-868-6600.4

Current Education

For individuals who wish to work in the mental health field as a licensed professional clinical counselor, the first step is to obtain an appropriate level of education. California State University at Bakersfield offers a Master's program in counseling psychology that prepares students for licensure in California. Classroom learning, combined with field experiences in clinical settings, gives students theoretical and real-world learning experiences. Graduates of the program have a wide range of knowledge and skills that prepare them to work in both public and private settings. More information about the program is available by calling 661-654-2363.5
