Current Education

The mental health needs of exceptional children are addressed by the Springfield Public Schools' Special Services Department and the Phelps Center for Gifted Education. Children with intellectual, emotional, physical, or mental challenges take part in a comprehensive educational program that seeks to meet their academic needs, as well as prepare them to function in life at the highest possible level. Each child in the Special Services Department has an individualized plan that outlines the services he or she is provided, as well as goals for social and emotional growth.4 Children who demonstrate above-average scholastic aptitude can participate in one of several programs that provide high-level academic opportunities. The programs offered by the Springfield Public Schools take into account the unique social and emotional needs of intellectually gifted children. As a result, children participate in activities that build social skills and promote positive peer relationships.5 More detailed information about these services is available by calling 417-523-0000.
