Paula's Education and Experience
After attaining my master’s degree in 1998 and becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), I have had the great pleasure of working in various therapeutic settings throughout the Comox Valley.  From supporting couples and families in private practice, to working in non-profits with youth who struggle with substance use and individuals who know grief and loss intimately, and then leading a team that specializes in outpatient mental health, I have diligently and enthusiastically honed my wide-ranging skills as an individual, couples and family therapist.
Preferred Modalities
The therapeutic techniques I choose to engage are eclectic and vary given the specific situation.  I work with teens to seniors, and a majority of my practice revolves around work with couples, or individuals with issues related to grief and loss, anxiety and depression.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) most weave their way into my style of doing therapy due to their emphasis on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and the valuable understanding of neuroscience and benefits of Mindfulness.  Working with couples has always been a highlight; my burgeoning understanding and practice of The Developmental Model of Couples Therapy has reinvigorated my drive to provide sustained, healthy, positive growth in the dyad.  With a solid grounding in Systems Theory and using a Trauma-Informed Approach, other modalities such as Narrative Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Attachment Theory, Solution Focused, and more, flow through my process of supporting growth and change.
Benefits of working with Paula
I have a core belief that each person has gifts and resources within, and sometimes what people need most is guidance in recognizing and then utilizing the strengths they are already have.  From an outside perspective, and with my experience, skill and genuine warmth, I provide internal clarity, confidence and ability to shift even the most challenging issues.  My clients appreciate the chance to work collaboratively in the safe, secure environment of the beautifully renovated Nourish Wellness.  What they most appreciate, however, is being heard, valued and accepted at those times in life that are most painful.   In our work together, people gain knowledge and understanding; they leave with specific tools and a greater appreciation and awareness for not only themselves but others around them.  I help people build skills and grow as a secure individual...within their partnerships, within their families, within their communities and workplaces, within their greater world. 250-650-7282
