Dr. Richard Amaral is a registered psychologist working with people across the lifespan – from children as young as five to those in their senior years (65+). His specializations have been in the areas of addictions (to substances or behaviours such as gambling), mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety), and on anger and related issues (e.g., abuse, relationship conflict). His research and clinical experiences in these areas have helped clients gain better control of their emotions, especially those struggling with anger.
Along with providing psychotherapy and counselling services, Dr. Amaral also facilitates workshops for groups and organizations, and has been providing these services for over 11-years. He will be facilitating groups at Markham Psychologists offices in the areas of relationships, anger management, and learning how to bring balance into one’s life.
Dr. Amaral uses an interpersonal approach to understanding the client’s concerns. His goal is to help the person develop insight into understanding the patterns in how they are behaving. Once the client begins to develop insight into why they may be relating to others in a certain way, then change will begin to take place. Ultimately, the goal is to create a safe and comfortable working relationship where the client is able to openly discuss anything they would like.
Dr. Amaral received his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in applied psychology, specializing in counselling. He received his Master of Arts degree in counselling psychology from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon and specialized in working with adolescents and addictions.
