My Professional Qualifications

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with a master's degree in Counselling Psychology.  In addition to my academic qualifications, I possess over 10 years combined experience in career and personal counselling including 6 years of post-graduate experience providing mental health services. My practice and formal education are complemented by ongoing professional development in areas such as:
- cognitive behavioural therapies (REBT, DBT, ACT)
- trauma-informed practices (TIR, CISM, Psychological First Aid, mindfulness)
- career counselling (career strategy, career assessments)
- risk assessment and intervention (substance abuse, suicide, partner violence)
- disorder-specific interventions (depression, anxiety)
- Supervision Provision

My Counselling Approach

As a result of the varied experiences I have gained through my education, work and ongoing learning activities, my practice is influenced by the model proposed by Glenn Larner known as paramodern therapy.  Paramodern therapy is an eclectic integration of modern approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapies and post-modern approaches such as mindfulness, narrative and solution-focused therapies.  My practice is also rooted in common factors theory which suggests that the outcome of therapy is influenced not only by the evidence-based practice used to intervene but also by the therapeutic relationship, client factors and the belief the therapist and client have in the effectiveness of therapy.

My Personal Philosophy of Change

The influence of my professional and personal experiences have led me to believe that we are all fallible beings. However, we are capable of imagining and realizing our potential within the reality of our contexts and the meaning we attribute to life. We are simultaneously the authors, co-authors, editors and co-editors of our thoughts, feelings and experiences not simply victims of circumstances.
We possess in ourselves the ability to read and question the past chapters of our lives in order to inform and influence, if not create, what comes next in our stories. Our interaction with co-authors and co-editors can help us realize this potential. I hope to collaborate with those seeking co-authors, and in some cases their co-editors, to facilitate the writing of future chapters. Our past, present and future co-exist, but our past and present do not have to overshadow our future, they can illuminate it.
