About Mississauga, ON

Clarkson, Erin Mills, Erindale, Lakeview, Lorne Park, Malton, Meadowvale, Port Credit, Streetsville, Cooksville

The City of Mississauga was incorporated in 1974 and has experienced phenomenal growth in the last three decades, attributed to its proximity to the Greater Toronto Area. This is Canada’s sixth-most populous municipality having increased its growth to over 700,000. Being a debt-free city, a 50-story condominium tower is slated for completion by 2010, as a landmark named, “Absolute World” which was designed during an international architectural competition in 2006. Chinese architect Yansong Ma from the MAD firm had his winning design dubbed the “Marilyn Monroe”, for this curvaceous tower. Canada’s busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International (opened in 1937 as Malton Airport), is located in part of the city and numerous major highways pass through giving access to Canadian and United States destinations. Microsoft, Pepsico, General Electric, Wal Mart and other Fortune 500 companies have located their Canadian headquarters in this region.

The Mississaugas First Nations tribe greeted the traders from Europe in the 1600s. Iroquois and Algonquin tribes were driven away by 1700.1 The original 84,000 acres of land was purchased from the Mississauga tribe for 1,000 pounds, which opened the area for settlement. The Crown gave land grants to colonists who emigrated after the American revolution. The communities were located near natural resources and waterways for industry and fishing. The most common religion here is Christian. A second land purchase in 1820 led to the displacement of the tribe which was relocated to the Grand River Valley reserve. With the growth in industry contributed by the railway a Council was formed which took responsibility for road maintenance, a police force and mail delivery services. Most of the area was agricultural land with orchards and vegetable gardens.

Mental Health in Mississauga

Community support and mental health facilities are common around Ontario, and the free government health care includes mental health services. The free of charge government facilities extend mental health services to a wide range of the population. Mississauga is one of the safest communities in North America, the crime rates are low and people feel content in their environment. A 100% of the children in the city receive an education of some sort, be it an apprenticeship or college diploma. Furthermore, 80% of the people are gainfully employed.2

These reasons have reduced the occurrence of specific and extreme mental health issues, but the facilities available continue to develop over time for the benefit of residents. The Credit Valley Hospital provides 24 hour free mental health services to residents of Mississauga on an emergency and appointment basis.3 A range of disorder therapy is offered, including eating disorders, substance abuse and anxiety disorders.

Current Initiatives

ReLinC Services is a not-for-profit community service organization that provides case-based and solution-based mental health services to residents of Mississauga over the age of 16.4 Patients with a history of mental illness can work with their case managers' to devise customized therapy plans that cater to their individual needs.

Mental illnesses do not have to be psychoses; they can be minor issues as well. The purpose of ReLinC is to make residents in the Mississauga community feel confident in the resources at their disposal. ReLinC services prioritise confidentiality and counseling sessions can take place at individuals' homes too.

To learn more about ReLinC, call 905-848-7583 to speak to an advisor or set up an appointment.5
