*If you or you and a partner are struggling with relationship distress or need to refresh and rebuild what was once a fulfilling connection, I can help.*
*If you as an individual have experienced any kind of personal trauma, ranging from abuse, neglect, or violence to accidental injury, or any kind of serious incident, I can help.*
*If you are experiencing the blues, anxiety or worry, or frustration in your life or career, I can help.*
*My fee is slightly higher than other local practitioners but because the overall duration of therapy may
be shorter, costs may also be lower in the long run.
I have been working as an individual, couple and family therapist for over 40 years. I am very experienced and a straight shooting communicator. In our work together I will work hard to get a clear idea of what is troubling you and together we will establish a plan or a strategy to create improvement and change.
I have been interested in being a helping professional for most of my life. As a youngster, I had a severely handicapped younger brother who required constant care from family members. I learned about suffering early in life.
As a result, I also learned about compassion and caring.
This made me curious about how to deal with and resolve emotional distress. Immediately after high school I set out to learn what I could about helping. At the time it meant searching out programs in the U.S. I was very fortunate to be able to access highly excellent training in the Southern California university system.
I received my master of science in counselling from San Diego State University in 1970.  Post degree, I interned for one year with a California Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Javad Emami, a trainee of Milton Erickson.  I then returned to Calgary and started one of Alberta’s first private practice clinics in psychology, in association with Dr. Charles B. Truax, a world renowned psychotherapy researcher.  In 1976 I took full time employment as a the Assistant Education Coordinator and Family Therapist at the the Family Therapy Program, Division of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary.
In 1983 I became Coordinator of Family Therapy at the Calgary General Hospital, remaining there until 1993, when I re-commenced full time private practice.  From 2000 to 2003 I wrote On the Couch an advice column for The Globe and Mail.  From 2003 until 2005 I wrote a similar column for Avenue magazine in Calgary.
I have taken training from Dr. John Gottman in marital therapy; the Milan Team and Michael White as well as Drs. Karl Tomm and Lorraine Wright in family therapy; and from Dr. Francine Shapiro for EMDR.
I have also taught courses at the Family Therapy Institute, Calgary Health Region for several years.
I now mostly offer services to individuals, couples and trauma victims. I am very direct as a therapist. Once we have a mutual understanding of your specific concerns, I will establish an action plan to work toward resolution. This may  involve talk therapy to gain insight; supportive treatment, homework communication tasks, or aiding couples communicate in or out of sessions.
I am well trained and very experienced. I will do my best to help!
