Located in the northern, upper edges of the Chihuahuan Desert, Albuquerque is considered the crossroads of the state. The elevation is one of the highest in the United States, ranging from 4,700 to 6,900 feet. The Rio Grande runs through the city and is considered an exotic river because it flows through a desert. There are a number of faults that border the city, including the ones that have made the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. Albuquerque's cityscape has expanded quite a bit since the 1940s. The portion of the city that dates prior to the 1940s is very different in style than the portions built since. Specifically the newer portions are divided into four neighborhoods with large roads running through them, in essence making them quadrants. The positive aspect of having the area broken up into quadrants is that the residential neighborhoods are shielded from noise and the lights from the major roads. The different quadrants are classified as Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest.1

Mental Health in Albuquerque

Albuquerque has higher-than-average rates of illicit drug use. Over 17 percent of the city's residents report using drugs within the past year, among which the most popular are marijuana and prescription pills. Residents of the city also report higher rates of substance abuse disorders than the national average. Cigarette use and binge drinking rates, although still high, are falling and are lower than both state and national averages.2 Yet, many Albuquerque residents face difficulties from substance use and addiction, including job loss, family violence, and homelessness.

Therapeutic Living Services (TLS) is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive services for individuals in need of mental health care. TLS focuses specifically on housing needs, providing structured group homes throughout the city, in addition to in-home services for people living independently. Additionally, TLS offers psychosocial rehabilitation classes that helps individuals appropriately deal with anger, acquire improved social skills, and enhance the ability of clients to manage day-to-day tasks. Outreach and educational programs, as well as crisis intervention services are also provided. Contact 505-268-5295 for further information.3
