Syracuse New York was first inhabited in the 1600s and is today the educational and economic center point of the state. With almost as much activity as it has residents, which is closing in on one million, Syracuse offers recreation of all categories. Syracuse's Green Lake State Park offers amazing scenery and outdoor activities that are a delight to all tastes. This park houses two glacial lakes encompassed by forests. What is even more interesting about these lakes is that they are known for their high potential for evidence of ancient plant and animal life. On that same note, there are many historic museums to choose from. The Erie Canal Museum is a one-of-a-kind experience. In a real canal boat, children and adults alike are welcome to mingle with the past in an interactive 1850s adventure. For a mix of interaction and outdoor fun, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park is a journey enjoyed by all. With lions, elephants, monkeys, and over 600 other animals, the zoo is open 365 days a year with both indoor and outdoor exhibits that also cater to the weather.1

Protecting the social, emotional, and academic needs of young people is the primary purpose of the Syracuse City School District's Student Support Services. School psychologists and social workers help families strengthen their relationships through one-on-one and group-based exercises that promote communication, understanding, resiliency, and other essential functions for a family's ability to overcome life's obstacles. Services to address the needs of poverty-stricken or homeless students are also available, and ensure children have the supports they need to stay in school and continue their education despite not having a permanent residence.
