Welcome to Tompkins and Associates:
At Tompkins and Associates, our clinicians are exclusively trained to work with children, adolescents, young adults, women and pregnant/postpartum women with a combined 20 years of child/adolescent and family focused clinical training. All our providers are doctoral level with specialist training we are not generalists!
We are leaders in our fields, teaching and training other clinicians, as well as presenting at national and international conferences in our areas of expertise. In addition to years of private practice, we work and have worked in schools, universities, hospitals and mental health centers. We are well connected to a respected community of providers if referrals are needed, including but not limited to psychiatrists, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, and nutritionists.

Denise Tompkins, Psy.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who is a specialist in child, adolescent, and family issues as well as pregnancy and postpartum mood and anxiety issues. Dr. Tompkins is the owner and founder of Tompkins and Associates.She has always held a strong passion for helping others. Dr. Tompkins works to build strength in her patients and families, helping them to see their challenges in a new, more positive light.The therapeutic relationship is her greatest tool and she couples that with evidenced based treatments to move clients and families toward healthier, more normative development. Through the course of working with children, adolescents and families, Dr. Tompkins develops a strong bond with parents. As a result, many women and mothers have sought out Dr. Tompkins for individual therapy. Additionally over time, she has developed a strong interest and expertise in working with women starting their families pregnant and postpartum women and the special forms of anxiety and depression that develop as a result. Dr. Tompkins has become a leader in working with this special population, training other medical personnel, developing programs and presenting internationally on this subject.
Amy Bergholtz, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist trained to work with children, adolescents, adults, families, pregnant women and couples. She has worked in a variety of settings including public schools, therapeutic day school, residential and outpatient clinics as well as private practice. Dr. Bergholtz completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles and completed her undergraduate degree at Tulane University in New Orleans where she focused on psychology and womens studies. Most recently, Dr. Bergholtz has worked for several years at Allendale Association which is an organization dedicated to working with youth and their families who have severe behavioral and emotional difficulties. She has also worked with many couples. Prior to that, she worked in Los Angeles at a community mental health center focusing on children, adolescents and families/couples. Dr. Bergholtz has a special interest in working with school aged children and adolescents. She enjoys working with women of all ages who are facing anxiety, depression and life stressors such as preparation for college, career, marital and relationship struggles and the ever challenging balancing act of career and family. In her clinical work she believes that the relationship between therapist and client is the building block for working together to achieve the clients goals. She enjoys collaborating with clients and tailoring her approach and techniques to their particular needs. Her free time is spent with the love of her life, her son, family, and friends. More than anything, she enjoys a good cup of coffee with a friend or can be found trying to convince someone to join her in exploring a new exotic restaurant or food.
Yvette Gonzalez, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who has specialized in working with children and their families for over 15 years. In addition to working at Tompkins and Associates, she is the Program Coordinator of Assessment services at the Erikson Institute Center for Children and Families in Chicago. Dr. Gonzalez is also a certified specialist in Infant Mental Health and completed an internship with the Fussy Baby Network where she had an opportunity to work with mothers experiencing postpartum depression, as well as working with couples seeking support in caring for their infant. Before working at the Erikson Institute, she worked at the Childrens Research Triangle in Chicago and has been a School Psychologist in the Washington DC area for seven years. Dr. Gonzalez received her doctorate degree from DePaul University in Chicago and completed her clinical internship with children and adolescents at the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine. Following her internship she worked as a research assistant at University of Chicago. Her areas of interest include working with young children and their parents, children presenting with anxiety, depression, behavioral disorders, developmental challenges, and attachment difficulties. Dr. Gonzalez uses an integrative approach when working with families, including developmental guidance, collaborative problem solving, cognitive-behavioral play therapy, and child-parent psychotherapy. On a personal note, her family means everything to her! She have two sisters to whom she is very close, their children, her parents, and her extended family. Although she has enjoyed living in the southwest and east coast, for her, there is no place like home in Chicago.
