Understanding the underlying reasons for your addiction is key to your recovery. Substances seem to help you cope but they only help you to temporarily escape from the problem. Therapy can help you to gain insight regarding understanding the aspects of your life that the substances help you avoid. These overwhelming problems can be faced in therapy in a supportive environment and help you to learn effective coping skills to face future problems.

David Mark, MS, LCSW

School Psychologist, Licensed Social Worker, Certified Gottman Therapist

Jamaica, New York 11434

I truly enjoy working with individuals struggling with addictions. Slowing down and moving the client into a different place and space is an area that I have had positive experiences with in my practice. Individually or in couples counseling or even at an Art and Science of Love Workshop has been a particular interest and area where I have succeeded as a therapist.

While most treatment approaches to addiction include 12 step programs, rehabs, and now sober living houses, Grey Matters International, Inc. provides a wildly successful alternative to traditional models of addiction treatment----that keeps the brain in mind. That is, talking to the conscious brain while the primal brain is deciding things even before you are consciously aware? Well, that is the problem to solve in addiction. We have the solution utilizing a new cutting edge neuroscience-centered brain rebalancing system. Contact kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or call 877-606-6161.

Esther Goldstein, LCSW,MSW,CASAC-T

Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist

Carman Ave, Cedarhurst, New York 11516

I have extensive training and experience working in drug treatment outpatient programs. Addictions are a complex concept. However, there is treatment, when you are willing to commit to the healing and journey that lies ahead of you. If you feel that life has gotten too tough to deal with, and/or that your addiction is taking away your quality life and possibly jeopardizing valuable relationships and/or job opportunities, I invite you to gently begin taking a look at some things a bit deeper. Together, we can explore the reality of the struggle, and in a supportive fashion look at the tools and steps to help get you to the next best place internally, empowering you to make better choices.

Hal Brickman, LCSW, RCSW, CSW, MSW, CHT

New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Manhasset, New York 11030

The cycle of addiction is dizzying to the addict and it creates what I calling "doing" some forward movement in growth. And undoing. The old (by now probably moldy) undoing). The trapdoor for the addict is you know the drug offers relief. And since you live only in the hear and now (emotional and physical pain can cause that feeling) you want the instant relief that it seems only the drug gives you. My job is to gently and sometimes not so gently dispel you of this massive myth. What you really need is to learn to slow down by substitution of behaviors. It will be clearer when we meet.

Zalman Nelson, LMSW

Licensed Professional Therapist

Manhasset, New York 11030

Addictions impact so many people in so many forms, including their loved ones, often in Co-Dependent relationships with the addict. But Addictions serve a role and meet a need, and that has to be identified and alternatives found, for treatment to succeed. Many people avoid and hide from pain and suffering in their lives. With support you can face it and get your life, future, and dreams back.

This is an area of treatment where I have seen many miracles. Successfully moving beyond substance dependence and abuse is not a matter of will power and character. Paradoxically, being strong willed and independent can work against recovery; addictions are very 'sticky' and five decades of research and experience confirms that attempting to keep them in check without help does not work. Twelve step programs (AA, NA, CA, etc) are the ‘gold standard’ of recovery, and are tried and true methods of achieving lasting abstinence. I possess a strong 12 Step program background, but know that not everybody can walk into a meeting and feel at home. Come for a consultation and see what is possible.

Elana Chasser, LCSW, CSAT, CMAT

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, Certified Multiple Addiction Therapist

Merrick Avenue, Merrick, New York 11566

Sexual addiction is painful for both the addict and their partner. It is a process addiction; different from substance addictions like drugs or alcohol. This addiction wreaks havoc in relationships and causes a great deal of fallout (consequences) when it is disclosed to or discovered by the addict's partner. It is painful, even when there was no intention to cause hurt. I specialize in sexual addiction treatment, working with addicts, partners, and couples who want to recover from the effects of this disease. There is great success when people commit themselves to a true and honest recovery.

You will not be judged for your use, or made to feel any stronger than that which drove you to seek treatment. You have identified or been instructed to explore a behavior or behaviors that are interfering with your ability to maintain or achieve relationships and goals. Utilizing motivational interviewing lets explore the ambivalence you have toward making change, while additionally exploring the often deep feelings and experiences that inform your self image.

While I am not a CASAC, I have worked with numerous men and women as they address their struggles with alcohol, drugs, sex, etc. Support is such a powerful part of coming to grips with any addiction. You need to feel that you are not alone. In addition to a therapy environment, I do believe it is important to engage in a group dedicated to the particular challenge at hand. So important to not feel that you are in this alone.

I address prior psychoactive substance dependence addictions, sexual addictions, bulimia nervosa, pathological gambling, internet addiction, nicotine addiction, compulsive shopping or buying. Inherent to this is targeting mood, anxiety, and any accompanying Attention Deficit Disorders, as deficits in affect and self-regulatory functioning usually precede and increase the development of the aforementioned addictions. We will explore your tendency to engage in pleasure-producing behavior characterized by impaired control and continuation despite harmful consequences with the aim of eliminating the addiction and substituting it/them with healthy endeavors and feelings.
